Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Atef Alam Eldin, President of East Port Said National University, the RePlastics team is participating in the qualifying rounds of the University Waste Management Competition with its innovative project, ReFilament, which presents a practical approach to recycling plastic waste and transforming it into valuable products for use within the University.
The project aims to recycle plastic water and beverage bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and repurpose them by converting the plastic into filament that can be used in 3D printing to produce a range of plastic items needed by the University.
The project aligns with East Port Said National University’s commitment to promoting sustainability and supporting waste recycling by reducing reliance on newly purchased plastic products and minimizing the amount of waste generated. These efforts contribute to reducing the University’s environmental footprint and making more efficient use of available resources.
The team is led by Mahmoud Mohamed Samir Ibrahim El-Rawdy, a third-year student at the Faculty of Engineering, under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Mohamed Mohamed El-Sakka, Director of the Mechatronics and Automation Engineering Program.
The ReFilament project represents an excellent example of applying engineering knowledge and student innovation to develop practical, sustainable solutions to environmental challenges and transform waste into useful resources.
The University reaffirms its ongoing commitment to supporting students’ ideas and innovative projects, encouraging them to turn academic knowledge into practical solutions that contribute to building a more sustainable university environment and align with the state’s efforts to achieve sustainable development.
